Coaching

Coaching services for individuals who are seeking authentic growth. Personally, professionally, as parents.

  • Discover your ultimate identity, ‘Self,’ through Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Live in the present moment while healing the past and creating the future
  • Become spiritually aware and access spiritual presence through practices such as meditation, conversation and reading ancient texts
  • Become embodied through tested somatic techniques
  • Empower relationships with self and others through neuroscience and effective problem solving
  • Understand personality strengths and weaknesses

Susan Smith Counseling Services, PLLC is now offering coaching services as defined below. Coaching is a wonderful way to engage in personal and relational growth when there are not pressing psychiatric diagnoses to address or when a client’s mental health needs are being supported adequately elsewhere. Coaching services work towards positive change and personal empowerment, mentally, emotionally and interpersonally; and support relational healing, internally and externally.

How are Coaching Services different from Mental Health Treatment?

Coaching is distinguishable from mental health treatment in the following ways:

  • It does not make medical diagnosis and is not intended to treat a psychiatric diagnosis.
  • It is not covered by insurance.
  • While it can facilitate healing for wounds of the past, it is focused on future oriented change.

What about coaching for parents?

Parent Coaching as practiced by Susan Smith Counseling Services, PLLC…

  • Seeks to serve the child’s best interest by helping the parent to access and implement concepts and skills of parenting that support healthy parent-child relationships;
  • Allows the coach and parents to work together without focusing on pathology;
  • Encourages a non-judgmental space for parents to work on bettering themselves and their parenting skills.

Coaching services at Susan Smith Counseling Services, PLLC partners with clients using multiple resources, such as…

  • Skills and knowledge based resources, such as books and media by experts.
  • Somatic practices, including mindfulness, meditation and body exercises.
  • The Internal Family Systems (IFS) modality is used for empowering clients by reprocessing internal obstacles that get in their way of being their best, authentic Self in their world.
  • The Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) method gives parents important conflict resolution skills to approach children with challenging behaviors.

Can I engage in both Coaching and Counseling services with Susan Smith Counseling Services, PLLC?

While at times a counselor may use coaching techniques to supplement their work with clients, coaching services do not offer intended treatment for mental health diagnoses. Therefore, be sure to discuss at the beginning of services with Susan Smith Counseling Services, PLLC if you would like to engage in coaching services. We will decide together if coaching or mental health treatment is the best path forward for you. Please note that coaching services may be discontinued at anytime if Susan Smith Counseling Services, PLLC determines that there is a primary need for mental health treatment.
